Late night thoughts part deux

I posted a late night thought several years ago, but the allergy meds I took tonight are keeping me awake. Anyway, Mary and I have been discussing generational curses. She got a new book that talks about the spiritual root of disease and such.  I have read about generational curses in the Bible, and listened to a sermon on the subject that showed me that as alcoholism can be passed from one generation to the next, that is a generational curse. It wasn't till tonight as I tossed and turned that I put it all together.

From a scientific view, the psychological articles that I have read, show that there are addictions and abuse that are passed to one generation to the next.

From a theological view, these things have a spiritual aspect like in Deuteronomy 5(NIV):
[8]  “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. * [9]  You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers * to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, * [10]  but showing love to a thousand * [ generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Now, the reason I bring this up is because as I have been working with youth and in my own family there are some of these things going on. Recently Mary and some of the other adult leaders were working through the names of the kids and saw problems that they were working through and in a lot of cases they were in families that their parents were working through the same things.

Working from a perspective that God wants you to be whole and your family whole, we work to share one another's burdens to help bear up the strain that these things bring. In so showing love, and since God is love and Christ the manifestation of God's love on earth paying the ultimate sacrifice in his death, we are trying to bring the spirit and body into wholeness.

The problem is, especially with teens, is that once they "get saved," they often fall back into the problems as they aren't necessarily cured from the addiction, yet, but they go against the counsel of others, and try to save their friends. Often falling back into the addiction. We have been encouraging the kids to talk to the adult staff and help us hold them accountable, so that they don't stray, but with recent events with one kid we see that it is a long journey.

Not sure why I had to share this, but I needed to let this out. There is probably more to this that will come to light, but I think that this is a good place to stop.

A retreat

Mary and I had the opportunity to go on a retreat this weekend. Part of this was for the business end of the youth ministry at the church. Part of the day was spent relaxing, where I read a book on youth ministry that I've wanted to read, as well as do some lectio devina. The lectio wasn't as successful as I would have liked, but I was left with a few impressions.

One impression was from Hosea 14:2-10. It has to do with repentance. Recently, I have been reminded that some of the sayings of Jesus started with, "It is written." So I have been looking in the Old Testament for those sayings. Hosea writes many things that are repeated in the N.T. The impression is that I need to study this book.

Another is that my accountability project with a couple of teens will be starting soon. As I read the youth ministry book, I realized that my greatest source for these guys will come from the Bible.

There may be more, but that will come later.

Are you really working?

Why I am leaning Republican this election

I guess I would be as some would say cener right in my beliefs. I have a hard time reading blogs that go too much right or left. I liked McCain before it was stylish because when I have looked at various sites on voting records, he has come down in the middle. Do I agree with him 100%? No, but after listening to Obama's talk at the Saddleback forum, I haven't fully been persuaded to go Dem this time. I say this time, because I have voted Dem in prez election more than once. However, at this point in the campaign I was dismayed to see that when a pick of the VP enrages the left side of the aisle so much that they must attack family, before they have even spoken.  So when I read Victor Davis Hanson's commentary I had to share what I think is the most telling reason for the attacks.
Enraged feminists are apparently the gatekeepers for less well-educated American women, who are supposed to have 0-1.5 children not 5! Their husbands must be professors, lawyers, CEOs, editors—not snowmobile champions, union members, oil workers, and fishermen—or, worse, all in one! And unlike a Pelosi, Quinn, or Clinton, Palin, God forbid, did not rely on a powerful, wealthy husband or father to energize her career. Worse still, she took no women’s studies class, never attended the Ivy League, and shoots moose.
Works and Days » Target Palin

(emphasis mine. As Steve Green as Vodkapundit (or was it James Lileks?) said in an interview, they had me at she hunts, the fact that it was moose was the cherry on top.)

I never thought much of Hillary Clinton, until she decided to push stuff as first lady, and I never had any ill will toward Chelsea Clinton. She has been kept out of the limelight by her parents, and didn't get too much attention, even when campaigning for her mother. So now the Rep. nominate a woman and the coverage to me has sickened me and has caused me to look at the hypocrisy of the left. I want to here about the issues. If there is scandal, like Troopergate, Tony Rezko, Biden's son, or McCain's whatever, I'm good with that. However, the family leaves me to continue down the path away from traditional media and the Democratic party.

Small Group Statistics This Year

I read Josh Griffins blog from Saddleback church. I looked at the statistics and they look about the same as we get for our large group. We are trying to do small group, but have had very limited success.

  • 52% Female students
  • 48% Male students
  • 38% Freshman
  • 27% Sophomores
  • 22% Juniors
  • 13% Seniors
  • 37% got together 1-3 times outside of normal group
  • 34% got together 4-6 times outside of normal group
  • 96% of leaders said that email was the best way to communicate with them
  • 39% said texting was another good way to communicate with them
  • 25% of our small group leaders won’t be returning next year
  • 81% read the weekly small group leader email
  • 75% canceled 0-3 meeting times during the year
  • 15% canceled 4-5 meeting times during the year
  • 8% of our leaders are starting over again with freshman
These are the Saddleback stats.

Youth Worker Appreciation Day

I like this classic series of videos that YS is using to promote Youth Worker Appreciation Day this Saturday.

What a great idea! What are you doing to love on your youth worker this week?

I didn't realize that YS was doing a Youth Worker Appreciation Day.  It's kind of interesting that our Adult leader retreat is this weekend. Mary and I leave for Indian River tonight.

C. S. Lewis Quote

I saw this on my C. S. Lewis Quote Google gadget the other day:
"In the midst of a world of light and love, of song and feast and dance, [Lucifer] could find nothing to think of more interesting than his own prestige."
--A Preface to Paradise Lost

I think about that with our youth group kids as they struggle with things. A lot of them just want to be popular, when there is so much more to experience. In my experience, you will become popular if you learn, listen, and experience the things that God has for you. Experience life, don't be interested in your own prestige!
